Spending Ourselves to the Grave: Why Democrats and Republicans Have Got it Wrong

Article by Jeffery Lundblad

I am going to diverge a bit from my previous posts and comment on the issue #1 in the United States: Spending. It has been the customary practice to separate ‘government spending’ from ‘tax cuts, but as far as the balance sheets are concerned, they are essentially the same; both result in the government losing money. The latest budget released by President Obama forecasts a budget deficit of about $ 1.5 Trillion. In other words, the government will spend $ 1.5 Trillion more than it takes in through taxes and other forms of revenue. That number is then added to the decades of deficits that the government has accumulated; the total of which is currently over $ 14 Trillion.

Now, it is important to realize that the size of the debt itself is not what matters, but rather the ratio of the debt to the size of the economy as a whole. Why? It’s the same reason a bank needs to know the income of someone taking out a mortgage. After all, a $ 500,000 mortgage (debt to be paid) made to a person who’s income is $ 30,000 is very different from the same mortgage made to someone who’s income is $ 250,000 a year. The chance that the former will default is a lot higher than the latter. Hence, the ratio of the debt to income is more important than the debt itself because it determines the debtors ability to repay.

The graph above neatly outlines the debt-to-GDP ratio in the post WW2 era in the United States. After massive spending and reduced tax revenues in the wake of the Great Depression, combined with prolific spending on defense during WW2, the level of debt reached an all time high of 100% of the GDP. Thereafter, the economic growth outpaced the growth of the debt, falling to just ~35% of the GDP by the start of the Reagan Administration. Huge tax cuts and spending increases (particularly on defense) drove the debt back up to ~65% of the GDP by the end of the Reagan/Bush I era. The debt level tempered a bit in the 1990s, driven by reduced military spending and a strong economy. But just then, Bush II cut taxes yet further and spearheaded two expensive military campaigns which drove the ratio up to about ~75% of the GDP by the time he left office.

Today, as the financial crisis continues, tax revenues have sagged and the government has upped spending to shore up the economy. While most of this spending is justified, the deficits we are now running are unsustainable and MUST be reduced drastically in the next few years. The debt to gdp ratio is closing in on 100%, and could hit 120% in a few years if no action is taken.

That said, it isn’t like the government is doing nothing. President Obama’s budget has a slew of creative cuts (alongside creative accounting), ranging from painting embassies white to save energy to using videoconferencing instead of actual meetings to save on transportation costs within government agencies. Nevertheless, neither Democrats or Republicans, as a whole, have the political stomach to wrest control of the situation.

In fact, when one looks at the raw numbers they can’t help but smirk with irony. Since the Carter Administration and until the end of the Bush Administration there have been 5 Republican and 3 Democratic Presidencies. If you count the deficits accumulated under each administration and average them out, you will find that Republican Presidents outspent their Democratic counterparts by more the 4 to 1. The ‘fiscal conservatives’ who have prided themselves on ‘small government’ and ‘balancing the budget’ have contributed largely the the problem we find ourselves today. To be fair, if we were to factor in the deficits being run under the Obama Administration, the Republicans wouldn’t look so bad.

Democrats are failing to understand that significant cuts are needed in entitlement programs. Simultaneously, Republicans refuse to cut spending on defense. For the record, the United States spends more on defense than the rest of the world COMBINED…and that is EXCLUDING funds for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most importantly, Republicans do not seem to understand that you cannot balance the budget and cut taxes at the same time. Difficult choices must be made, but our politicians can only see ahead to the next election, and few are willing to do what it right for the next generation.

NY Republicans Still Out in Left Field

Article by Gene Lalor

Some people are just slow learners.

The New York Republican Party establishment, in which “Rockefeller Republicans” still hold sway, falls into that category. Someone should remind them of what happened nationwide on November 2nd when a resurgent conservative movement gave notice that there was a resurgent conservative movement.

You may recall that old brand of liberal, pseudo-Republicanism dating back to the late fifties which included such illuminati as Nelson Rockefeller, Jacob Javits, and Louis Lefkowitz who were all confirmed RINOs long before the term was created. To a man, they opposed Barry Goldwater for president in 1964 and managed over the years to make the New York Republican Party indistinguishable from the Democrats.

Back in 2009, new age RINOs demonstrated they still knew how to win elections–for Democrats. Then, the New York Conservative Party nominated Doug Hoffman for Congress in a special election in the upstate 23rd CD. Backed by Sarah Palin and the Tea Party and opposed by confirmed RINO Dede Scozzafava and by GOP bigwigs, Hoffman was the clear favorite.

Long story short: Scozzafava dropped out of the race, appropriately on Halloween, endorsed Democrat Bill Owen, and Owen won by 2.3%

Fast forward to 2011 and another upstate special election, in New York’s 26th CD, the seat vacated by Chris Lee after he opted to audition as a centerfold instead of continuing as a congressman.

In a déjà vu moment worthy of Yogi, GOP leaders rejected conservative, decorated Iraq War veteran and Tea Party favorite David Bellavia in favor of millionairess pro-abortion Assemblywoman Jane Corwin. The move infuriated Bellavia’s backers who condemned the GOP establishment for its undue haste, for the secretiveness in its choice, and for abandonment of the party’s core principles: http://tiny.cc/4u8rr

Bellavia plans to seek the Conservative Party’s nomination, as does Corwin.

Considering Corwin’s pro-abortion stance and flipflopping on gay marriage, her chances are slim to none, unless the Conservative Party goes the route of the Republican Party and sacrifices principle for the entrenched, moribund establishment. In that case, Corwin, the Conservatives, and the Republicans will lose again, as they should.

Republican’s Now Courting Seniors On Medicare: View From Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey, Private Duty Caregiving Service in Carmel, California

Article by Richard Kuehn

Following President Barack Obama’s visit to Facebook headquarters where he had a town hall style meeting attempting to forge a better bond with our nation’s youth as well as senior citizens, it comes as no surprise that Republican’s are trying to move quickly to hold court with the elderly in advance of next year’s important elections. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on April 22 that Pennsylvania Republican Representative Lou Barletta kicked off his town-hall meeting by promising older residents that he wouldn’t slash their Medicare benefits. That’s a tall promise to make given the intense pressure in Washington D.C. to cut entitlement programs. “Whenever you hear that seniors are going to lose their benefits, I’m telling you now, it’s an outright lie,” Mr. Barletta told the gathering of constituents at a veteran’s group outpost in PA. In Rep. Barletta’s district, one in five people are on Medicare, one of the highest proportions in the country. He worked hard to convince those attending the meeting that those on Medicare won’t be impacted because the proposed plan only impacts those currently under 55 by replacing Medicare with a stipend which can be used to partially fund private insurance. One audience member who voted for Barletta’s Democratic opponent in the last election said she wanted to make sure the program would be there for her niece, her children and her grandchildren. “You said nothing in your campaign about I’m going to change Medicare. Now you’re voting for a plan that will destroy Medicare,” said Linda Christman. “I won’t destroy Medicare. Medicare will destroy itself,” said Barletta. At this point, the room erupted with people yelling at each other and one man had to be removed by the police. A recent poll by the WSJ and NBC news found that 16% of Democrats and 14% of Republicans think Medicare is OK the way it is. 44% of Democrats (versus 35% of Republicans) believe it needs minor modifications, 26% of Democrats (versus 30% of Republicans) think it needs major changes while almost double the Republicans (19%, versus 11% of Democrats) believe it needs a complete overhaul. Rep. Barletta’s recent town hall meeting shows just how contentious the issue of changing Medicare is, and how tough it will be to resolve.

Republicans Call For Tax And Spending Cuts

Republicans Call For Tax And Spending Cuts

Republican presidential candidates seemed to support a combination of tax reductions and spending cuts to make up for an election-year recession. They were arguing in a debate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, sponsored by the South Carolina Republican Party and Fox News Channel.

Mitt Romney said during the debate, “We should reduce taxes on middle-income Americans immediately.” John McCain, on the other hand, proposed spending cuts to get a grip over the budget deficit. He promised to veto pork barrel spending bills. However, he also stressed that the Bush era tax cuts should continue.

Fred Thompson proposed a cut in corporate taxes, and said that tax cuts brought about in recent years should be extended. Rudy Giuliani also advocated tax cuts. In an advertisement, he promised to send the largest tax cut in history to Congress on his first day in the White House.

Of all candidates, only Ron Paul said he believed that there was a recession and that it was only going to get worse.

The debate was part of the run-up to presidential primaries in Michigan and South Carolina. McCain, Romney, and Huckabee are expected to be the main contenders in the Michigan primary. A failure here would be critical; the candidate who finishes third is very unlikely to win the race.

Economics were dominant during the first part of the debate and hinted at the concerns regarding the approaching recession. Meanwhile, Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, has said that he would do everything possible to maintain the expanding economy.

Responding to the recent incident in which the Iranian speed boats were involved in a skirmish with U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf, all presidential rivals gave a clean chit to the U.S.

naval commanders. Some also underlined an intention to be tougher with Iran in the future.

For instance, referring to the incident, Huckabee said that if it occurred again, the Iranians “should be prepared to see the gates of Hell.” Echoing Huckabee was Thompson who said, “I think one more step, you know, and they would have been introduced to those virgins that they’re looking forward to seeing”. Romney said, “I believe Iran represents a very serious threat.” He added that the incident was a calculated to test U.S. defensive responses. He said,” It points out that we have in Iran a very troubled nation. Also, Romney’s criticism of Paul for urging against US involvement in another war met with a mixed response.

Republican faithful near despair at their plethora of ho-hum candidates who have underwhelmed America. It’s time to prune to get serious!

Republican faithful near despair at their plethora of ho-hum candidates who have underwhelmed America. It’s time to prune to get serious!

Article by Ruthsella Corasol

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Many years ago Nancy Saunders, one of England’s celebrated gardeners, informed me in no uncertain terms of one of the essential conditions for horticultural success: prune, prune, ruthlessly prune. Find the little buds and, ruthlessly, cut them off, focusing on just one bud, the bud you have selected for greatness. A house full of gardening awards great and small, local and international, testified to the lady’s insights and no-nonsense approach to a stunning garden and a reputation as diva, sorceress, sculpter of beauty, impatient with anything other than the eye-catching and important.

The Grand Old Party could learn a lot from Ms. Saunders and her stringent regimen for success.

Politically alert Americans, particularly Republicans, have watched with growing dismay, chagrin and (let’s be honest) complete fascination as the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Reagan, titans all, revered by the nation, has become the Pee Wee league of presidential candidates — and this despite stunning electoral success in 2010 and a Democratic incumbent who has failed, so far, to gain the affection of the nation and portray himself as more than the necessary evil.

In fact, there has never been (since its founding in 1856) so many GOP candidates for president with at least some (no matter how attenuated) claim to plausibility. Even in the days of brokered conventions with “favorite son” candidates given nomination just to impress the folks in Paducah, such lavish numbers were rare indeed.

Surely, the GOP should be glad that it has so many potential presidents at hand, but if you recall Nancy Saunder’s stern admonition about how to produce gorgeous flowers — prune, prune, prune — you get the message that too many candidates produces weakness, not strength and is a sign that the party that believes America is safe when and only when it governs has lost its way, becoming rivulets, not the great river it has so often been.

This situation has produced torpor, procrastination, and a growing sense that the GOP is not up to the necessities for governing a great land beset by high and serious problems, and economic muddle.

The biggest most Republican donors are, in unprecedented numbers, sitting on the sideline, listless, uninspired, concerned. Fully 45 percent of Republican voters (as per a May, 2011 Associated Press poll) are dissatisfied with their presidential candidates, a figure that is growing, not diminishing.

Democrats, of course, are not-so-secretly thrilled by a scenario which already shows them far ahead in fund raising; (President Obama has made it clear he’ll raise a billion dollars or more to keep the White House as his house), with GOP fissures now causing some of the donkey ilk to speak, not too loudly just now, of land slides and electoral college pulverization. Early days to be sure… but the possible is there, oh yes it is. It is unseemly for Democrats to be so exultant so early… but they are.

For Republicans to counter this political “Happy Days”, they must Saunderize, at once, with a will, ruthlessly… for a chance to produce a winning candidate. Humbly, since no one of significance in the Grand Old Party has stepped forward with garden shears and elimination list, I present myself accordingly. Without any expectation of power, privilege, patronage, or even gratitude, I am here to save the party, its chances for victory, and its (as yet) not obvious presidential candidate.

In the next few minutes, I intend, with a few deft moves, to change all that.

These Republican candidates (declared or still ruminating) are a bad joke:

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Ron Paul, Congressman from Texas.

Michelle Bachmann, Congresswomen from Minnesota.

Rick Santorum, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania.

Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City.

Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska.

Buddy Roemer, former Governor of Louisiana.

Herman Cain, Godfather’s Pizza executive and Georgia talk show host. (An expert on three cheeses, but anything else?)

The unanswerable reasons for eliminating this drab, unappealing crew of Tweedle Dees and Tweedle Dumbs? Not one of them alone, or all of them together, have one ounce of charisma and the kind of fundamental popular appeal a winning presidential candidate must have. None is even remotely a household name (or done the exceptional to deserve it); some are so threadbare (Santorum) that they didn’t merely retire from public office; they were booted out by local voters presumably the most knowledgeable about them.

In short, these are the Morgan Memorial, the Salvation Army candidates, colorless, spent, yawn making, infuriating… their highest potential service to the party to be placed as vice president on a sure-to-lose ticket.

Nice guys… too early.

Tim Pawlenty, former Governor of Minnesota.

Bruce Johnson, former Governor of New Mexico.

Jon Huntsman, former Governor of Utah. These three have legs… but they are too short and undeveloped just now for the Oval Office. They should be planning to emerge, not now, but as the most beautiful, fascinating candidates of 2016. Needless to say, each will disagree vehemently with my patriotic assessment and so, like Pawlenty, build candidacies on the irrelevant details of personal resume. (“I was born in the meat packing town of South St. Paul; my father was a truck driver.”) Stop it, stop it at once!

Some who were in or contemplating, now (gratefully) out.

Haley Barbour, Governor of Mississippi.

Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas.

Donald Trump, billionaire enfant terrible.

John Thune, U.S. Senator from South Dakota.

Mitch Daniels, Governor of Indiana.

We owe them profuse thanks and appreciation for reading the tea-leaves early and right; no one wanted them for any reason and certainly not for president.

What’s left? Just one.

Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts, though capable of denying it, stiff, austere, little loved, policy wonk, 100% committed to becoming president, doing whatever he must.

Romney may very well be the eventual nominee, but he must learn how to rouse America and make us not only think well of ourselves… but do well, too, a surgent nation again.

No one from this huge field of candidates has been able to do this and make themselves seem the inevitable resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And that’s why Republicans of every stripe are becoming increasingly desperate, tossing even more names in the hat. They should instead solve the problem as Nancy Saunders would: prune, prune, prune. Then focus on turning the last bud into something glorious, historic, larger-than-life. For whatever pygmy we select today… by election day 2012 that candidate will have been massaged into history, person of legend, colossus. Let’s hope by then he or she is ready for what we insist they be…….

iYogi tech Support Review

iYogi tech Support Review

Article by Thomas Jon

I am not a computer geek and this review is intended for people like me. There are many technical support reviews examples on web that can make you learn but most of them will not go any deeper than explaining through examples. Recently I had to ask for some technical support from iYogi for my PC and my experience wasn’t that bad. I give a huge credit to the technician been provided to me.

The review of my experience with iYogi technical support might be worthwhile too. Their support options can be pretty affordable. Their professional support “list price” is $ 169.99 for one whole year for remote tech support. My experience isn’t necessarily representative of the kind of support you will get but you will definitely get an idea how does it work. All I can do is to educate people about the kind of support you will get.

Without any notice I had this weird freezing of my computer. I was almost in the middle of an important work and suddenly my computer crashed. I called iYogi for help as few days back I gone through their website and I found it pretty decent to ask help from unlike other technical service provider (I don’t want to take name though). The technician was pretty helpful and supportive too.

Tech support has always been a huge burden for most companies. But all you have to do is to browse through the net for tech support newsgroups, iYogi has many of them, and then you can quickly realize that most customers don’t even know how to put forward their questions. Mixture of different computers and other things makes any sharp and talented technician confuse and makes it impossible for them to resolve it.

Communication with the customers has to be real supportive, which u definitely get from iYogi. Technicians usually gets carried away with their troubleshooting and sometimes cuts off the customers when they speak or neglect their opinion of the issue because a user or customer only knows what it’s really about. Aside from this, an employee or technician should always be courteous and well mannered towards many customers because that’s their area. They should also make the customers understand about the troubleshooting so that the user gets familiar with it.

A real good tech support person has a lot of knowledge and training and it’s a valuable asset to ask for a good salary. iYogi does a lot to protect that type of talent and provide the essential and high quality tech support that some people need. To respond to this, iYogi is taking advantage of the fact that there really are a lot of iYogi people out there who are ready and willing and able to help the users. Some of them are the nicely paid tech support people with whom you might talk to on phone.

iYogi creates the website like http://www.iyogi.net, etc that makes it possible for people for customers or the users to communicate well and for also selecting the right program or plan for themselves. Instead of forgetting the websites that helped us out from the soup, I will suggest you to make a bookmark of these websites, for issues are always around the corner.

Since I went for the one year subscription plan, soon I received a call from a skilled technician over the phone. Though it took time for the technician to understand my problem but I still appreciate that I didn’t get that scripted response what we usually get for other free technical service provider, like after talking to those you feel like banging your head against the wall in frustration. The iYogi technician treated me like a customer but didn’t assume that I knew nothing. This made it possible to zero in on what to do remarkably quickly. After checking a few obvious possible ways, we set a remote connection to my PC so that the technician could work directly on my box.

The short version of my story is that, using emailed instructions the technician got to me right after that, and made me understand what actually causing the problem.

The enough good knowledge that is been taught by my technician was that when the computer cannot find an updated driver, it locks itself up and get freeze. The hardware drivers should be updated on a regular basis. It also helps in augment the computer’s RAM by increasing the PC’s virtual memory. RAM acts as a buffer to speed up access to your programs and files that are in use. Though all of your data is stored on your hard drive, RAM is much faster. Whenever your computer pulls up a file off the hard drive, it loads it into your system RAM so that it can continue to access it faster. The end result is a much faster interface with your computer. The more RAM you have the more programs and files your computer can keep stored in your RAM.

Since this is a virtual Basic site, I won’t be mentioning the brand name of my PC. If you are absolutely dying to know email me I’ll tell you everything. The technician updated my driver remotely and I’m up and cranking again on my PC.

After my whole remote session I have gone through their website minutely and I learnt that they have around 95% of customer satisfaction. I will definitely like to mention what iYogi is good at; employees of iYogi are good at working under supervision or within a team. The technicians are good natured personality and affable character and also help the team morale and team work. The personal traits and the characteristics can affect and individual’s output and team work much more than you can imagine. And they also leave a mark on customers mind.

If you roll your eyes towards the back of your head, you will realize that that you are not alone in making complaints for their computer. There always a tsunami of customer commenting on iYogi’s forum about their technical support. There are few praising and few are disapproving, maintaining all these by the technician and still giving you the satisfactory solutions is an appreciable job.

These guys diagnose the root cause of the errors with a device or hardware and if it can be resolved by manual resetting then they will guide the customers through the step by step process. They wait until the computer is restarted to ensure full resolution of the issue. After I finished speaking with the technician I also spoke to his supervisor, to express how much I appreciated my technician’s work. The technician has this amazing knowledge of the situation, the courtesy and respect he showed and their diligence in resolving my problem was extraordinary and most commendable. I truly appreciated working with him, as I learned a lot from them. He was a real trouper and quitting wasn’t a part of his character. iYogi should be very proud to have this member of your staff on your team and in your organization. It was a truly great job.

Getting online computer tech support has various benefits. One is that you save a lot of time and get you box fixed as soon as possible. Another benefit is that through their PC tech support guidance, you get some training on how to fix the computer issue. In case the same predicament happens again, you would know what to do to fix it. There by saving you the costs on computer repair tech services.
